Forestry Monitoring Programme SGS has the capacity to verify legal compliance within the forest sector and to independently monitor forest and timber trade activities, allowing governments to outsource the execution of selected public services with confidence. SGS offers a new public/private partnership approach to sustainable forest management and transparency in the international timber trade: the enforcement of regulatory compliance along with the encouragement of voluntary, market-led forest certification. Regulatory enforcement (PDF 179 KB) involves the verification of compliance by companies with legal requirements. "Independent Validation of Legal Timber" can help the government to ensure that forest laws and regulations are being followed, across a whole country or in a specific province. Voluntary Forest Certification (PDF 124 KB) promotes sustainable forest management practices through independent: forest management certification and chain of custody certification. Certification is a market mechanism, enabling companies to demonstrate that they have gone a step beyond legal compliance towards achieving sustainable forest management. It helps companies to market their timber products by assuring consumers that the products come from well-managed forests. Independent Validation of Legal Timber |
